In Fall 2008, the Kaibab National Forest (KNF) designed the Kaibab Forest Health Focus to identify areas on the three Districts of the KNF where the objectives of ecological restoration and fire threat reduction might be pursued in a socially viable and ecologically sound manner. The KNF partnered with the Forest Ecosystem Restoration Analysis (ForestERA) Project at Northern Arizona University to provide scientific support that helped stakeholders and forest service staff work together to 1) identify high-priority areas for mechanical and prescribed fire treatments, 2) produce data and outcomes that inform the work of forest managers and 3) build strong public engagement and outcomes that have a high degree of support.
In August 2009, after completing a series of seven working meetings, 4 main core group meetings plus a technical data workshop and two small groups for additional fine-scale priority and treatment guidance, the draft final report is now available (see below). Revisions and the final version of the report will be available September 2009.
We would like to acknowledge and thank all the participants for their dedication, time and hard work they contributed to this process as well as the USFS Kaibab National Forest for the vision and funding for this project.
